Variation on “gas leaks thru muffler”--Tecumseh 5hp

I realize others have asked about gas leaking from a lawn mower muffler, but this is perhaps a bit different: I put a new aftermarket carburetor on my old 5 hp Tecumseh TSV120 vertical engine in hopes of a cheap fix. Started right up, but after shutting down, I had hydrolock and gasoline practically pouring out of the muffler, almost as if the fuel in the tank were being syphoned out thru the exhaust—oily gas all over the mower deck. Would a bad needle/seat in the [NEW!] carb cause such severe leaking? Or did I miss something obvious in my install? No signs of dripping at fuel line, carb gaskets, etc.—just via the muffler.

Sounds like dirt in tank got under the needle valve seat.

I agree, sounds like the float is stuck open for some reason.

Simple to check, remove the bowl on the carb. and lift up on the float bowl, fuel should shut totaly off.
