Electric Toro Leaf Blower/vac running rough

I have an electric Toro Ultra leaf blower that's been running rough and unevenly for a while. On the low speed it's at the point where the motor starts to die, and smoke, but it still runs acceptably on the highest speed. I thought this might be worn out carbon brushes, but when I took it apart the brushes seemed OK -- not new, but not awful -- and had contact with the motor. I could try replacing them (this requires soldering on the Toro), but this does behavior suggest any other kind of problem?

If the brushes don't fix it, then it's a winding problem and not worth repair.

If it smoked then you've burned the insulation on the motor windings. There may be enough insulation left that it doesn't short out and completely die but it's not in great shape so I wouldn't spend much time or money on fixing it.

I agree not worth spending money on but before I trashed it I'd at least pull it apart and clean up the commentator with sandpaper, using a small flat bladed screwdriver or dental pick to clean up between the segments, and make sure the brushes can move freely in the holders.

Thanks Joe, I will do that, it will be good practice if nothing else, with not too much to lose.
