Tecumseh engine froze up ?
Brother tried to start his snowblower for the first time this year, seems froze up.

He first tried the electric starter, terrible noises, then rope, won't turn over. Removed spark plug, still won't turn. Checked oil, looks good. No problems for 20+ years, switched to Amsoil last summer. I've been putting full synthetic in mine, same engine, for years with no issues.

Someone told him to pour some Marvel Mystery Oil in the plug hole to see if that will break it loose.


Thinking about that this morning, is it possible the electric starter could be jammed up and not letting the engine turn over rather than a froze engine?

Any ideas?

Removing the starter would answer that question - it is possible.

Yes, it's possible the teeth of the starter or starter ring broke and have things jammed up.

Should be able to just look at the pinion gear on the starter to see what position it's in.
As the starter is engaged the gear rises to engage with the flywheel gear.
At rest the gear should be sitting close to the starter.

Should be able to just look at the pinion gear on the starter...

Just put a starter on mine this summer (thanks Pete) but after looking I can't see the gear on the starter. If I remember correctly he just has to remove the two bottom screws and it will slide down so he can.

He went out this morning to do that and noticed the bottom screws were missing, starter just kind of hanging there. Pulled it out and started right up with the rope.
