Craftsman 50 cc chainsaw blade cover issue

I have a craftsman 50 c.f. chainsaw that I removed the blade cap (?) to do some cleaning. I released the tension on the chain then unscrewed the two nuts to remove the cover. The cover should have come off smoothly, but didn't. Now that the cover is off, it won't go back in completely as it should. When I start the chainsaw, it's making smoke. I don't see what the problem is. Nothing is broken. Maybe the clutch assembly changed position?

Most likely the clutch drum brake band got engaged during removal or before removal (hence difficult removal). I'd reset the brake bar and see if it goes on properly.
