5.5 Craftsman tiller won't run
so my tiller sat for a couple years. 5.5 Briggs model 134202 engine. Will not fire. If I shoot gas in the air cleaner it will run, but will not stay running unless I keep spraying fuel into it. Is there a fuel pump or something that could of gotten dried out from sitting, or a common problem from these left sitting for long periods? Not sure if I ran it out of gas before I stored it but I did drain the tank. Thanks, John B.

Welcome to the forums.
If you didn't run the fuel out of the carburetor..... then there is your problem.

On that carb, I have always found the problem to be the diaphragm gasket (272538S) that is on the side of the carb under that little plate. Often, I have found that just taking that gasket off and rubbing it between your fingers with some motor oil, then reinstalling it will get it to fire. Obviously replacing the gasket would be a better long term solution. But I felt like I was replacing that gasket every other year.

Tried these solutions and still no go.
Hello,
I have what sounds like the same problem. I've completely disassembled and thoroughly cleaned the carb, removed the gas tank, cleaned all the lines, new spark plug, and new air filter. Tiller will only start if I spray starter fluid in the intake but it dies within 1 or 2 seconds. I cannot get it to keep running. Can anyone shed some wisdom on this for me?
Thank you,
Chris

It depends on the type of carb you have. If it relies on a partial vacuum to lift the gas, then yes... that's what your gaskets do.
