Craftsman RER 1000 rear wheel bolt

I have a Craftsman RER 1000 30” riding mower (model # 247.25000 serial # 1D252B20096). I removed the right rear wheel for a tire repair and when re-installing it the bolt that holds the wheel to the axle broke off. I was able to remove it with an extractor. I’m trying to figure out what size the bolt is do I can get a replacement. I took the stud I removed to Hone Depot and using their sizer it seemed to be a metric M8 1.0 about 3/4” long. When I found that size bolt, it wouldn’t screw into the sane hole as my stud did on the sizer. I tried several. I can order a new one for about $12 but would like to pick one up locally if possible. Does anyone know the correct size and thread for this bolt?
it is part #53 on the sears parts diagram:

A 5/16" fine thread bolt about 3/4" long should do the trick.
