Will a single coat of Zinsser Oil Based Primer work ?
I have applied a single layer of Zinsser Oil Based Primer and want to know if one single coat should be enough ? The directions on the can says two coats. I thought I needed to use an oil based solvent primer due the darkening of several paint test spots on the wall but now believe that the darkening of the paint might be due to a bad paint match but possibly still could be due to some contaminant in the original paint.

As long as it's a decent coat, 1 coat is enough. They probably recommend 2 coats to cover their butt if a diyer applies a haphazard coat and doesn't coat the entire substrate. It's ok to see thru the primer as long as it has all been primed.

Thanks marksr. One more question if the Zinsser is applied as directed on the can does it require a paint with primer added or can any paint be used that does not contain any primer ?

To elaborate - if you add/mix primer to paint, the paint is no longer as durable as it was before and the paint won't necessarily seal as well as primer alone would. Again, most repaints have no need for a primer. Primers are only needed to seal stained/raw substrates and to fix adhesion issues. They can also be used to facilitate coverage if there is a big color change.

I agree with Mark but phrase it a bit differently:
Paint and primer have different jobs. If you were to actually combine them in one product, neither would do its job as well. Why would you do that? The answer is that they don't.
