Urethane over latex paint

Hi All, I have painted a tray with latex paint and wondering what type of finish I can use to protect the finish.

I assume you aren't talking about a tray ceiling ??

Generally it's best to use the appropriate enamel paint rather than top coat it with poly/varnish. Oil base poly will yellow and deepen the latex paint it's applied to.

Exactly what kind of paint did you use? Sounds like you should have used a high gloss trim enamel.

In hindsight ,the gloss enamel is what I should have used,,never thought of it,it's a small serving tray, about 18"X24",the paint is a satin finish.

If you don't like the gloss, paint it again with the right stuff.

I agree! Applying a clear coat over paint complicates any touch up that might be needed later on.

What color is it? Oil base enamels dry to the hardest film but whites will yellow over time, waterborne enamels dry almost as hard but won't yellow. There are big differences in latex enamels, most of the cheaper ones are prone to chip and peel while the better quality latex enamels do a lot better [just not as hard as oil or waterborne]
