Wooden rocking chair painting

I am attempting to repaint some rocking chairs that were on my porch and am not getting very good results. Here's what I've done:

Washed them with Jomax cleaner, rinsed with power washer. This left a mix of some bare spots but mostly spots with some paint remaining.

First tried several light coats of spray paint and primer in one. That looked OK in parts but a lot of parts didn't cover well. I then went back and tried some primer and that helped but still didn't cover uniformly.

Any suggestions on what to do next?

Have you sanded down the wood after the cleaning and before putting on the primer?

Spray paint is seriously diluted paint; takes an awful lot of spraying to cover.

Just a very quick once over with some fine sandpaper, but that's it.

I'd brush the chairs, that will apply a thicker coat of paint, work the paint into the wood better and give longer lasting protection. It's too difficult to apply enough paint with a rattle can to get good coverage or lasting protection.

OK, thanks. I'm thinking because of some of the uneven coverage, I should maybe do another light sanding now. What do you think? How about deglosser and/or a brushed on primer before painting?

Liquid deglosser should only be used on old finishes, it's not intended for fresh primer or paint.
A light sanding between coats is always a good practice!
