Painting stair risers sealed in oil based floor finish?

I've got a red oak stair case stained and finished with oil based floor finish (long since cured).

I'd like to paint just the risers (vertical bits above the treads/steps). Of course no one will walk on the risers, so can I get away with just a 220 grit sand, then paint? Can I used water based paint?

Advice/suggestions appreciated.

Thanks!

220 grit is ok but you really need to use a solvent based primer! Latex enamel is fine for the top coats.

Hey mark,

Sand, oil based, then water based top coat? Been a while since I used oil based anything. How long will I have to wait between primer and top coat?

Depends on the primer you use. The instructions on the can will tell you that kind of info, but dry times are increased if you put the paint on too thick.

If a short dry time is important you can use pigmented shellac like Zinner's BIN.
1 coat of primer and 2 coats of finish is the norm over stained/poly'd wood.
