painting over tacky wood finish
Hi all,
I'm trying to paint an old wood dresser. I don't know what kind of finish it has on it, but I tried to remove some old tape/sticker residue from the front of several drawers with Goof Off, and the finish sort of melted and became very tacky. Even a couple weeks later it is still somewhat tacky to the touch. Does anyone know if priming over this is okay, or will I need to completely strip it off? TIA

While coating with a solvent based primer might help it would be best to get it to a non tacky/sticky state. What happens if you scrub it down with paint thinner?
