Protecting outdoor wood trim when staining deck ?

I need to stain my deck. There is a good amount of wood siding and screen porch 2x4 meeting the deck.
Is there a painters tape that works well on such rough surfaces? Also, don't want to strong of an adhesion otherwise I pint the siding...

I'm not fond of using tape as it can give a false sense of security. A rough surface makes it difficult/impossible to get a good seal with the tape. You'd probably be better off using some sort of shield.
pics would help us better understand what you are dealing with

I know of no tape that will work on a rough surface. At best you'll get a good bit of wicking underneath the tape. I would stain similar to painting and cut the edges in carefully.

Adopting an old car mechanic trick - cover the surfaces you don't want paint to stick to with a thick coat of liquid dishwasher / laundry detergent and let it dry.

Use a ruler or painter's-straight-edge to keep a fine line between the deck and siding/porch.

I've never much cared for pads on decks although I do like them for hardwood flooring. No bigger than the deck is I'd just brush it. On larger decks I'll roll and then back brush.
