Poly over paint?

Is this good practice to put a poly coat over paint? I made some laundry room cabinets and sprayed them white with semi gloss paint and they looked nice. Now I am making lockers for them and planned on painting them the same white. Would it make for a stronger finish? I know for sure I will be staining and poly the benches for the lockers, but should I do the paint as well?

Thanks!

There is no real benefit from applying poly over paint. Water based poly doesn't dry to much harder a film than latex enamel and oil base poly will discolor the paint. If I did anything it would be to top coat with a waterborne enamel.
