Deck stain

I applied 2 coats of a semi transparent stain to my PT pine deck two years ago. This is the third summer. The deck boards were seasoned for 6 months before staining. I used a big box stain. I have had good success with their paints so I thought the stain would be OK. Not so.

The stain wore through in spots last summer and this summer probably 10% of the deck boards are bare. I'm looking for a reliable stain that will last longer than paint. I've accepted that I'll probably have to use an opaque stain because I'm not going to strip all the old stain off the deck boards.

Any brand recommendations?

Sikkens is way up there for durability, I need to touch up my railings, they were stained 10 years ago!

Sikkens does have the best reputation. The average life for deck stains is 3-5 yrs but a lot depends on the environment the deck is exposed to. Better stains do tend to last longer but it's rare to get more than 5 yrs out of a deck stain that is exposed to the elements. Price is usually indicative of quality.

I haven't found anything that will let me go three years between coats.
