Ceiling drywall tape falling

Over the past year I've noticed drywall tape that's fallen from the garage ceiling. It started as just a little at a time but lately it's increased substantially. Today I found a piece about 8' long hanging from the ceiling. There's an unfinished area above the ceiling that's seldom used so I doubt the issue is vibration, except vibration from the garage doors.

Two questions. First, what is the likely cause? Second and more importantly, is there a need to replace the tape beyond the minor aesthetic benefit?

Humidity is the likely cause, especially if the drywall wasn't painted.
Tape serves as a barrier from any exhaust gasses.

This happens in my garage. Upon examination, there's no compound under the tape, just a layer over the top and then a sloppy texture job. I think this might be a common shortcut in garages. I haven't replaced any of it yet, but intend to "someday".
