What type of product to seal painted outdoor decoration?

My ex repainted an outdoor Christmas decoration for a local customer and isn't sure what product to use to seal the piece to ensure it holds up to the outdoor elements. The base is plywood and the paint is acrylic. Would spraying it with a clear exterior paint do the trick and hold up over time, or is there a better way? Here's a partial photo of the piece:

I'd consider a water based spar poly. You don't want to use the oil base version as it will alter most of the colors on the piece. An automotive clear might be an option.

Plan is to use water-based Varathane Spar Urethane, unless there are objections.
