Finishing post by stairs

Hey guys and gals.

I got this post by my stairs that's an eye sore. In hindsight this should've been done before railings were installed.

The two issues are the post's for the stair railings on the lower level, and the edge of the wall on the 2nd level. I figure for the edge of the wall at the 2nd level I can cap the post at that point and finish it with some trim. But I was wondering if anyone has an easier way of capping the post without removing my railings?

I'm not sure I understand what you want to do are you wanting to wrap the drywall covered column with wood? Personally I think it's fine like it is.

That's exactly what I want. Wrap it in something. It looks ok from far but it's really wavy and sloppy looking up close.
