Hi everyone, could the rear suspension that was damaged in the accident cause the car not to start and run? Or it has some sort of shut off switch that can activate during crash to prevent it from running? Thank you.

Did your air bags deploy?
Yes, there is usualy a cut off switch for the fuel pump that can get activated in an accident.
There is a fuel pump located inside the fuel tank of most/all cars that runs continuously when the car is running. After an accident the fuel pump can keep running which is bad if a fuel line got damaged so this switch turns the fuel pump off. I don't know the Mini but sometimes it's on it's own circuit and sometimes it's activated when the airbags deploy.

As Dane says, the switches can be almost anywhere. Most are under the passenger side near the glove box under the dash. It is an inertia switch that is activated in a collision to prevent fuel from being pumped inadvertently. It also may be an item that your collision specialist will be able to repair when he does the metal work.

No, air bags didn't deploy. Car won't start, and was towed to a body shop. They said that rear suspension is damaged and that's causing it. This just doesn't make sense to me, how the wheels are related to car not starting. That's why I'm asking here. My initial thought was the shut off switch activated. But they are saying that it willbe 3 to 8K for suspension. Sounds suspicious to me.

Would love to hear them explain the connection between suspension and engine operation. Here's some inertia switch info:

The switch senses the shock of a collision and turns off the fuel pump. So, it doesn't have anything directly to do with the damage to the rear end. A collision on any part of the vehicle could cause the switch to activate.
