Humming noise

I have a 2000 Chrysler Town & Country with 190000 miles on it. Just last week it developed a strange humming noise that I can't locate. One might even call it a low roar, but not an exhaust roar. At first I thought it might be the idler pulley, but now I don't know. It begins when I start the engine and does not seem to be affected by the engine speed. When walking around the vehicle it changes and seems most noticeable when standing outside the passenger front door, not in engine compartment or when hood is raised. I had the fuel pump replaced a couple weeks before it began, but the noise never happens with just the ignition on. Engine must be running, and before any fan starts.

Exhaust leak from somewhere underneath the car.

Reminded me of humm in my then Silverado. It was right below my seat and back. Irrelevant to engine RPM or speed. Hummmmmmmmmmmm. Drove me nuts, I looked for it countless times - never figured WDF it was. The only thing there was transfer case and exhaust pipe and they all looked well. Maybe it is transmission pump? They are said to have some sort of ATF pump inside, I believe.

Ok, do you have inline or transverse engine? And you say - noise is NOT coming from engine compartment with hood open? That pretty much takes engine pulleys and such out of consideration besides they will change pitch with RPM. Hum is something either blowing very fast or spinning at high RPM and this is why I ask - which way is your engine pointing?
Under pass seat, unless it's 4WD, you have possibly only exhaust.

Engine is transverse with exhaust outlet and transmission on driver's side. However, it seem I can hear noise better outside car on passenger side. Noise is very deceptive. Haven't had a chance to check out exhaust system.

When I was wrench turning noises can be very hard to trace. Have had noise everybody said was right front and it came from back of car.

Understood. Had an idler pulley go out one time and it was a rattle, not a bearing type noise and sounded like one side of engine, but was on other side. Haven't been able to get back to it yet.

Good idea. What would be a good item for creating smoke?

Turned out to be the fuel pump that had been installed several weeks ago. Thanks for your suggestions.

Never realized fuel pump is that much to the front of the engine. Now you know how deceiving the noise origin can be on a vehicle. It's one large metal resonator box.
