2002 pt cruiser brake issues

Hi All,

I hav a 2002 pt cruiser with 55,000 miles on it. The front brake pads and rotors are good ( changed about 10,000 miles ago) and the rears were in decent shape last inspection 9 months ago. The problem that occurred is I seem to have lost the power assist and when braking takes a lot more force to apply the brakes than usual. While stopping seems to be okay you have to press down fairly hard. I popped the hood for a quick inspection a short time ago and it appears the master cylinder is full of fluid and this has been going on for a couple weeks now so if there was a leak the fluid would probably be down quite a bit as the car has been used quite a bit. My next question is doing a quick search, I see there is a brake booster and vacuum lines as well. Any recommendations on how to check if the brake booster is working or any other thoughts on what would cause this and how to troubleshoot. Thx for the help.

Easiest thing to do is take vacuum line off booster and see if the braking changes. Be sure to cap vacuum line with something.

another easy way is with out starting the car pump the brakes. then hold the brake and start the car. if you feel the pedal drop then the booster is working.
