4wd

Make sure the 4 wheel drive transfer case is not in N (neutral) needs to be in high or low.

Any warning lights coming on?

Hello gentleman's, I have a Toyota 4Runner 1999, 4WD. V6, 172K Mile,
last week i have noticed that when i come to stop sign or traffic light the gear is not engaging even though the car is in gear (D). the RPM goes up but car not moving. if i turn the car off, and wait for I would say for 2-3 minutes than turn the car back on and switch from Park to Drive the car is moving no problem, no grinding noise or anything, and if i am on highway getting speed no problem, as long the car is moving.
So it look like a some kind of electrical problem with maybe a solenoid that is not engaging.
I must point that about 2 years ago I had a blown radiator that needed to be change and some coolant got into the gear witch was washed and maybe 10K mailes later i am facing this problem.
need some help, Love my 4Runner (2nd Owner for the past 16 years).
thanks for any hint of how to fix this.

Have you checked the trans fluid level ?
Needs to be done with it running in neutral on level ground.
If the trans fluid was contaminated..... there is no telling what could have happened.

Good evening PJmax, Yes i did checked the level of the transmissions oil, while it was running in N.
I even added some oil, I went to my neighbor that is a mechanic at a Mercedes dealer, and he is saying to drop the oil pan and check the shift solenoids, there is also on you tube some video that talk about this. its about $40 on ebay a set of all 3 solenoids. Item number 153107569810.
I don't think that i have any problem with the 4WD. got to make sure that the gears engage first.
Thanks for your reply.

Before you start throwing parts have it checked for codes. Not sure on OBD2 Toyotas, but I don't think transmission codes always light the check engine light.

FWIW, I don't think it's going to be shift solenoids.
