It's used to keep the heat inside the header pipes. That keeps the exhaust temperature up for better flow and the engine compartment a little cooler. There will be little noticeable benefit to most vehicles on the road.

It's raw fiberglass and is very difficult to work with.

I've used it back when I raced to protect against burns when accidentally touching the header. I wouldn't bother with it on a normal vehicle.

The heat retention will cause the header steel to degrade much more quickly, so it is actually a negative for street use. In racing the life of the system is not the main concern. I think the high heat causes carbon to migrate out of the metal making it brittle and more prone to cracking. This is beyond the higher heat oxidizing the metal more rapidly.

It can be a good choice where safety is an issue, with exposed pipes, the motorcycle guys use this stuff, maybe for those who burned their arm hanging out in a Morgan three wheeler or Lotus 7!
