Would using drywall sheet paper over tape work better for this repair ?

The repair is in between two shelves in a closet. Would the damage area have to be cut and meshed over or can you use the drywall sheet paper as tape. The damage section seems to be holding out fine the damage area does not go through to to the other side.Name:  IMG-20160825-00394.jpg

IF it is only the surface paper, cut a "football" around the offending area, peel the paper from the football and skim coat it with drywall compound.

Is that section of drywall still solid?

@marksr yes the damaged area is pretty solid but the cracked drywall piece or cracked surface of the drywall does flex a little.

I'd coat it with Zinnser's Gardz or an oil base primer [prevents the surrounding paper from lifting] and apply a coat of joint compound, sand, prime and paint.
