Can you use regular joint compound for a skim coat ?

Can you use regular joint compound for a skim coat or do you need a special mix of some sort ?

That's the best kind... thinned slightly with water so that its smooth...

Most any j/c will work but the regular ready mixed j/c is more user friendly. Thinning the j/c slightly makes it spread easier!
