cleaning up drywall ends
I am dry walling family room- In some areas where the 2 sheets come together- the drywall paper is frayed. I am afraid it will mess up the taping process. Is there a way to clean that up prior to taping?

I use a sharp knife to cut rough edges at a 30-45 degree angle. That insures that there is nothing sticking up to catch when applying mud.

ok thanks- that is what I tried but it's tricky getting all the paper "frays" out...... Is it recommended to "push" the 2 ends inward with the butt of the knife creating a small valley? I also was reading about possibly mixing mud with plaster of paris to provide a stronger bond. Just wanted some more opinions

I agree you are over thinking, the joints will be taped eventually.
Like PD said, cut a V groove between the sheets to get rid of any frays and to relive any stress. That is the same process as fixing stress cracks.
Use plenty of sharp blades because they dull quickly when cutting paper. I would buy a 100 pack and change them more often than you might think.

If you have a sharp blade and hold it so it's at a fine angle to the sheet it will cut the paper smoothly.
