Hi there. I removed some peeling wallpaper from a bathroom in a house I bought recently. This wallpaper was clearly put up quickly to stage the house for selling. I planned on removing this wallpaper and painting the walls. However, In many places, I found the old wallpaper that didn't get removed, and it looks like glue was just put on top of it. In a few places I could reach, it pulled the paper off to show the brown in the drywall.

I'm at a loss at what to do now. I just wanted to paint the wall. But clearly this needs repair. And how do I get that remaining wallpaper off?!

I think I attached some pics correctly. Any help here would be certainly appreciated.

 

Prime any exposed gypsum with Zinsser Gardz and then you need to skim coat the walls smooth with joint compound, sand, prime and paint.

 

So I shouldn't try to get the remainder of that old wallpaper off that's behind the glue? Just do all of this on top of that? And I don't put that primer on top of the wallpaper spots? Or do I just prime the whole dang thing?

 

Anywhere you have exposed gypsum or torn paper you need to use Gardz .... or an oil base primer.
Ideally all the wallpaper would get removed but sometimes that isn't worth the effort.

 

Sorry, apparently read the post too quickly the first time. Yes, try to remove as much wallpaper and glue as possible.

 

Any tips on getting that paper off? I mean, I say it's glue that's covering it, but it's not tacky at all. But there is clearly some substance that's on top of that old paper. I can't even really get to the old paper. I wonder if Gardz was already put on it, and that's why I'm having issues getting to it...

 

Here are some products from lowes, but there are many different ones. There are cutting wheels that score the paper so liquid will get under paper. I find a squirt bottle with water in it works pretty good. Usually I just give up and replace drywall. I find it quicker than removing really stuck wall paper.

If you can get the wallpaper paste wet - it will dissolve. IMO water works just as well as any of the commercial or homemade concoctions. Scoring the paper does help! When the paper is well stuck and I'm convinced it won't turn loose later, I'll call it good and skim coat over it with joint compound.

 

I tried both hot water and rolling on Dif, also scored it with one of those circular scoring tools. That's what got me to this point, hence being out of ideas on how to get it off. I mean, mayyyybe I didn't get it wet enough, but I thought I got it pretty dang wet. I guess I'll try to figure something else out.
