Repairing water-damaged plaster next to tub

I'm prepping to repaint the bathroom in our 1950s house. I started removing the damaged plaster next to the tub, and the hole got bigger and bigger. It is now 12" x 5".

Can I just use a setting compound, or is this going to take a bit more?

How thick do you need to build up the repair? I normally use Durabond for plaster repairs although sometimes I'll inlay a piece of drywall to speed up getting the required thickness.

It needs to be 1/4" thick. I think I'll try the Durabond to keep it simple.

Thanks marksr!
