Keeping eagles/owls etc. away from small dog in back yard

We will have a house with a 6ft chain link fence around the back yard, about 60'x70'. We have a small dog, about 10lbs, that could easily be taken or at least harmed by an eagle or an owl, and there are a lot in town. Is there any way to make the yard safe from them? I once covered my yard with chicken wire, but this yard seems too big for that. Scarecrows are not reliable enough. Any suggestions are welcome.

Go outside with it and bring him/her right in when they're done? Seems a simpler plan.

You won't keep preditor birds away from your property. Consider screening only a portion of the yard.

I'm not aware of any chemical repellents. Scary things such as scarecrows and moving objects, reflective tape, inflatables, etc sometimes work on protecting a garden, but even then the birds get used to it over time. Raptors are the smartest and quickest to learn. Would probably scare all dogs in the neighborhood. Tony's idea sounds like a workable solution.
