Ford Ranger engine miss

Hi all. My 2000 ranger developed a intermittent miss, at 118 m miles. Plugs are new,[90m] miles, I will try gas, and lube solvents, if not I will go fir the scan diagnoses. Any ideas? Thanks, Sid

I would put the scan ahead of any chemicals. If you don't have your own scan tool many auto parts stores will scan it at no charge. Sometimes one problem leads to another, so if you have multiple error codes that are possibly related, and are unsure where to start, it might be worth resetting them and check it in a week or so to see what pops up first.

Have you checked the fuel filter?

I sucked about half a bottle of Techron into the engine , waited about 20 min, ran it until the smoke cleared, and it is better, but not 100 %, it stumbles at idle in gear, but runs good at speed. I will wait a couple of days, and do the scan deal if it doesn't clear up.I had also replaced the plug wires at 90 m as I replaced the plugs. I will change the fuel filter. Thanks for the replies.

Doesn't cost anything to test the coil if you have a multimeter. An intermittent miss is often the coil. Engine codes should help diagnose it. Akapedro is spot on.

It turns out that one of the coils on the coil pack was bad, and one of the plug wires on the plug end had some erosion due to a cut or tear in the rubber plug boot. It runs good again. Thanks for all the ideas.

Nice job. Seems like one of the 6 packs goes bad about every time it rains.

Glad you got it fixed! Those intermittent issues are always the hardest to find. I spent a month one time figuring out why my F100 wouldn't start. A short section of the wiring harness was bad but when you put the meter probe on it - it completed the circuit showing it good.
