Steering intermediate shaft
Hello,
I have a 1996 dodge ram 2500 2wd with a Cummins 5.9 in it and I'm trying to find a replacement steering intermediate shaft. I see lots of the dorman 425-264 shafts advertised but they say they only fit 4wd drive models. I see chinese knockoffs that claim to be compatible with the 425-264 shaft and they claim to fit both 4wd and 2wd trucks. Does anyone know if the dorman one will fit my truck or know of any shaft that will other than one from the dealer?

I just replaced the intermediate steering shaft/U-Joint on my 2002 Volvo S60 . . . . and I used the Part originally engineered by Volvo.
It's the "steering", and that's kind of important, so I didn't think it was a good place to economize.
I think this is the original part (Dorman 425264) :

It looks like it was used for almost 8 years (1995-2002) on all 1500s, 2500s, and 3500 Pick-Ups.

That's the number I listed originally, but according to dorman that is only used on 4wd. That's why I have the question. The dealer shows 2 different parts for 4wd and 2wd but I have to buy the whole $900 steering column. Borgeson shows one shaft for both 4 and 2wd. Other makes claim to fit both 4wd and 2wd, so I'm trying to find out what the difference is to see if I can use the 425-264.

I see these 425264 shafts priced from $60 on up to well over $300; but here's a listing on eBay which shows the compatibility with BOTH Rear Wheel Drive and Four Wheel Drive . . . . 23 pages worth of it.

But as Pugs suggested, a Dealer "should" be able to verify that this is the correct unit for your vehicle . . . . even if you're not buying it from them.
