Heater core pipes

I'm having a very difficult time seating the copper pipes that go in an out of my heater core.it seems to leak at connection of 2 copper pipes.
Since the ends aren't too big on core but come out fairly far can I extend the rubber hoses on over the connections on the core an do away with the pipes ,an use hose clamps?

might give year make and model of what you are working on it may help to get an answer most heater cores that I'm familiar with do just have a hose and clamp connection over the inlet and outlet of the heater core sounds like you have some sort of other connection maybe quick release or threaded?
