Water to Refrigerator

I own a home in Pittsburgh that was built in the 1940s. The current water line to the refrigerator is a copper line that runs behind the cabinets and has a tendency to freeze. Alternatively, I could run that line across the ceiling in the garage and then up through the floor to the refrigerator hookup.
Is that a good idea?
Would I need to run it in some sort of conduit?
Should I run it in plastic or copper? If copper, can I reuse the copper line?

Is the garage heated? If not, this does not sound like an improvement.

I'd suggest you use a plastic line... run it from your sink's cold water side up to bottom of the countertop. Use coax cable staples to tack it to the bottom of the countertop... toward the front edge of the cabinets. (Right above the drawers) Drill holes from cabinet to cabinet as needed until you get to the fridge... at which point it would head to the back corner of the countertop and out the side of the cabinet and behind the fridge.

Any passage in front of the cabinets would be blocked by the oven...

No, the garage is not heated. Should I search for an insulated line...

I think using the plastic line will be a great idea for this work. Because it'll be cost effective for you, to do replacement, if the line created problems again of freezing.

How does an oven block it? Go behind the oven!
