Any caustic solution can eat up the impellers of a pump. Often they are made of aluminum (better ones have SS) and are highly subject to corrosion. I'd do the cleaning manually.

I am very much against chemical drain cleaners. At best they may damage your pipe or equipment and are a major concern environmentally. The only way to properly clear a clog is with a snake.
BTW...I really appreciate you asking first before trying.

I don't have any problem using my favorite drain cleaner (Liquid Fire) if the circumstances are right. Since there is an ejector pump involved, I certainly didn't want to damage it. It's a tub/shower drain & it's no more than 3' from the pump. I removed the lever assembly that closes the drain & the water is still drains somewhat slowly. I expected a lot of hair to be on the cylinder. No hair was there. Thank God that it's still on my head.
