Vessel Sink Drain Question

Hi, I'm installing a vessel sink and drain. I bought both separately on amazon but the drain I bought was the recommended purchase. Where I am confused are the two slots above the threading. If you assume in the pic that there is Countertop between the nut and sink, what is stopping water from coming out of those 2 slots and all over my counter and vanity? Did I get the wrong drain? Thanks!

..... the site is not allowing me to upload pictures at the moment but here is the link to the drain on amazon

I think I need to get this one, without the overflow slots...

Yes, you need the pop up with no overflow.

For a leak free install, apply Teflon paste on the male threads in the area where the large rubber basin washer meets the tailpiece threads.
Pop up assemblies tend to leak from the inside of the large basin washer, the paste will cure that. I learned to always apply the paste, snug up the basin washer, and haven't had a leak since.

The pop up has 2 washers, they are silicon and not rubber as I thought.
One is angled and goes under the upper sink flange, the other goes under the counter and is the one I said should have Teflon paste applied to the male threads.
