Constant running water

Constant running water
Recently noticed the sound of running water in both bathrooms (they share a common wall through which I believe the plumbing runs). Turning off the main valve stops the sound and the meter. Have not noticed any evidence of a leak. Checked both flappers. Any way to trace a possible pinhole leak?

A pinhole leak inside the house that you could hear would become visible fairly quickly.
Do you have a basement in your house or are you on a slab ?
Leaks in/under the slab are very common.

If you can hear water running and shutting off the main makes the sound stop... you've got a leak. First you can turn off the shutoff for the toilets, flush and hold down the lever until no more water flows out then listen for the leak. If you still hear it then you may have a leak within the wall. Quite often they are not visible as the water can drain down within the wall cavity. If your house has a crawl space or basement you can go down below and look for water.

My first guess is a 'leak' in the toilet. Unless you've put some dye in the tank and watched the bowl, it's quite possible you don't see the constantly running water. Like Pilot Dane said, turn off the toilet shutoffs and see if the sound and meter stops. Most likely it will, since the fill valve tends to make more noise as it is running than a leaky pipe would.
