Expansion tank location

I have a single level home built in 2000 that has an expansion tank near the main water entrance to the house. This tank is located up in the basement rafters approximately 25 feet away from the hot water tank. I have noticed lately that my hot water pipes are hammering when turned on and off quickly from the clothes washer and so I check the tank to find that it is waterlogged and in need of replacement. Should I put one back in this location or should I install it closer to the input to the hot water tank?

OK I will answer this myself according to sketchy info I have found. As long as the tank is on the same line as the hot water tank then I should be good. It appears it should be located after the back flow valve and before the hot water tank on the same run, preferably with nothing else in between.

This is an expansion tank with a diaphragm, and you've concluded that the diaphragm is ruptured ?

Yes , keep it where it is.

Find out your house pressure from the street. This tanks come pre charged with 40psi in them. Before install add air accordingly.

So example. If street psi is 70 psi then you add 70 psi to the tank before install...

Yes its ruptured. If I attempt to check the air pressure then water sprays out! Pretty sure its toast.

The line to my house is currently 70 psi so I think I will step up to a 5 gal tank instead of the 2 gal that I currently have.
