Dropped new drain cover down floor pipe

Help I've just had my badly blocked drains cleared. Bought a new cover for the floor drain unsure of the size and it's dropped down straight down. I cannot get it out and frightened this will waste all the money I've just spent and all my drains will block again.

Welcome to the forums!

If it's a steel cover you could use a magnet like mechanics use. How far down did it go? can you see it?

If not to far down get a medal hanger, straighten it out and than bend a hook in it . Go fishing, hope you can see it with a flash light.

If it's metallic, try a telescopic magnet.

.

No luck it was smaller than the size of a fist have put my hand down as far as it will go in every direction and can't feel it now do you think there's any chance it won't block it up again?

Chances it won't cause a problem in the future are slim. I'd look for a powerful magnet, say rated to lift 25 pounds or more and tie a good strong nylon cord to the magnet and again go fishing.

The magnet idea is great, but only if the piping is plastic and the drain cover isn't aluminum!

I thought of that after I posted, Norm. I was thinking a grate maybe of brass/bronze which would make the magnet idea worthless. Even if the piping is cast iron using a strong enough magnet that hits the steel grate solidly it will usually not also stick to the CI piping.

Magnet

If I can no longer feel the drain is the magnet still even worth buying? It feels like the drain splits off in 2 different ways.

What you need to do is get a second identical cover or at least attempt to find out if it's steel and if a magnet will even work. Some covers are non ferrous and a magnet will not be attracted to it. If that cover fell in... it's probably too small anyway.

Is the drain a basic Tee ?

You could use an endoscope with a cell phone. Basically a camera with a light that attaches to your phone. They are great to check for clogs.

FACE PALM!!! Boy do I feel stupid. I've had one of these for the past year. Never thought to use it when I had my big clog a few weeks back!

Should still be a trap on the drain so the cover shouldn't have gone any further than that. I would continue fishing in the hopes that it is easily retrieved.
