What do I use to attach to the 1 1/2 PVC drain pipe coming out of the wall?

Do I use a cemented on trap adapter, coupling or a flexible coupling to attach to the 1 1/2 PVC drain pipe coming out from the wall under a sink?

Are they all just personal preference really?

It seems that the flexible coupling is some type of rubber and has two bands that tighten with screws ?

The other couplings would be permanently cemented to the PVC pipe coming out of the wall?

The rubber 'Fernco' type adapters have their place, especially when connecting into a metal drain piping. But they are more expensive and don't do anything better than a standard 1.5" PVC slip coupling. I too would just use a slip coupling.
