What is this plumbing Under my sink?

Can anyone tell me what this big upside down U is under my kitchen sink. The drain from the garbage disposal goes in one side but I can't figure out where the other side goes when it goes down into the cabinet

The only logical reason for it is some type of vent system. Usually the vent goes straight up the wall. There's no telling where that incorrectly installed one is going.

Do you have a basement ? Have you checked down there ?

A loop vent is normally seen in an island where there is no possible way to vent up a wall.

Yes, that is in an island so it's called a loop vent huh? Never heard of that before but I learn something new everyday!

And yes we have a basement but the ceiling is drywalled so sho knows where the pipe goes once it's down there

It ties into another vent that goes through the roof. Loop vents are not common, but neither are sinks in islands. I've seen a few.

Here's the basic concept. Looks like it's likely installed correctly.

The loop could be a lot higher.
