How much water can there be in your system?

I'm attempting to sweat on some new water lines today but I can't get the pipes drained. I cut into both hot and cold in the basement only after turning off the water valve at the tank (I have a well) and opening all the fixtures in the house to let it drain for maybe 10 minutes. I've done this many times at this house and it never takes this long. I have emptied three 5 gallon buckets from the water running out of the lines. Any ideas?.

Maybe the shut off valve at the well is not completely stopping the flow of water.
It should drain 99% in a minute or two and then it will drip for hours.

Make sure the water valve at pump is all the shut, Maybe turn pump off. A small trickle use slice of bread stuck in pipe., It will soak up water so you solder the connection. Bread will dissolve come out when water turned on. Make sure the hot water tank is off. Another way is use shark bite fittings. Cost more but much easier

Well wouldn't ya know, 2 minutes after starting this thread it stopped. I've got it done now. I did turn pump off then hot water heater and closed it's valve. I've never seen anything like that.

I've heard about the bread thing but haven't tried it yet.

Chronic back up from house trap

I replaced every pipe in this old house built back in 1911 thinking I was in good shape but nooooooooo, Once the new toilet was installed we realized that there was water coming up from the basement floor. The main pipe which collects all the water draining from the house was cracked under the cement floor. My plumber then replaced it with new piping going from just under the floor at a gradual pitch to the drain in the corner of the house bypassing the old cracked pipe. I thought all was good until I rented it and after a few weeks sewer was backing up onto the cellar floor. I left the drain pipe open down there because my french drain drains water which leaks into the basement into that drain. The city came out to unclog the drain which didn't work so I called the plumber and he also unclogged the trap and ran a camera all the way through to the street which he found to be clear. But it keeps backing up regardless of how many times I have had it cleaned out. It worked for many years before I came along. What the heck! The only option now is to dig the darn thing up and hope we can attach a new trap to the old pipe. If not I'll have to dig the whole thing up from outside. One thought is to plug up the open drain that drains water from the french drain which is also where the sewer water comes in from. I'll need a sump pump if I do this. Hello My wife and I are looking at a lot in North Dakota. The lot sits about 200 feet from the city sanitary sewer. A city employee who works with this said the pipe he esitmates is about 48-54 deep. I read that you need 1/4 per foot of slope for sanitary sewer systems. I think this means that over 200 feet i need just over 4 feet from start to connection. Am i correct my assessment above? What options does one have in instances like this? I should also note that i haven't checked yet with the city but it is not allowed to have a septic system. I am going to do some additional check on this however. If the city would allow for septic. Is installing one similar in cost to connecting to city sewer? What is the difference in cost between the 2? Thanks for the help.Read More
