Does Pex pipe freeze?

Need to replace some damaged copper pipe ( 1/2" ). I will use Pex. Don't want to demo siding and sheeting, but guess I have to. Will insulate pipe and use Pex.

Thank you, Charlie.

Pex pipe isn't freeze proof, but generally doesn't burst when the water in the pipe freezes. Best to not install it where subject to freezing temperatures.

Is there water in it? Is subject to temperatures below 32F? Then yes!

I'm glad someone else handled the obvious already. Yes, water below 32f can freeze.

PEX tubing is highly resistant to damage if the water inside freezes. The plastic naturally stretches with the expanding ice without damage. The thing to watch out for is fittings and your fixtures. PEX fittings and your faucets can not handle freezing water and they can crack or burst if the water inside freezes.

you could also abandon the old line and route your new pex lines through an interior wall if you're going through all that trouble. It's a bit like fishing really thick cable, but they are flexible enough to fish through a wall.
