The manual air relief valve will not shut off completely. Can anyone tell me if it can be removed by simple unscrewing it?
I can't tell if it is threaded or not. The part number is CCX1000V....

Since the Manual Air Relief Valve is secured by a nut inside the Manual Air Relief Assembly, I believe the entire assembly must be removed to get at the nut. Since the unit is under pressure, what precautions are necessary before the MAR Assembly is removed? Does the filer tank need to be drained?

If you have the air bleed top assembly then there is a nut. Remove the top assembly to gain access to the nut.
The pump does need to be turned off and the tank pressure must be released. Just opening the air bleed will release the pressure. See if this video covers your application.
