what to look for in terms of roof hail damage

Hi all

Yesterday we had a thunderstorm blow through, and it dumped some hail (most were between nickel and quarter sized)

We just moved into this house, and the roof is older--has maybe another 4-5 years left in it, according to my inspector. My question is: how do I know if the hail damaged the roof? Should I start by calling my insurer? Or should I get someone to inspect the roof for me? Hail is not a common thing in this area

I may be able to get up there, but I dont know what I would look for.

Thanks for any advice

-k

You insurance company will send out an adjuster to look at your roof. Not sure if they'd paid anything with the roof being at the end of it's life .... but it probably depends on how much damage was done.

Call roofers in your area and see if they will give a free inspection and estimate. Get more than one estimate.

An experienced person can look at the roof and tell with some accuracy if the damage is recent or years old. If your insurance company does approve the repair they may prorate it so if the roof was near the end of it's life the payment may be minimal. Then you've got a claim on your policy that might affect your rates.

thanks for the replies!

I had a roofer look at the roof. He said I have at least 10 years left in it. And no noticeable hail damage.
