Paint for Sheet Metal Chimney Cover

The chimney has a rain cover at the top made of sheet metal. What kind of paint should I use? I haven't repainted the sheet metal for a few years. So I expect minor rusting. If rusted out, I will replace it. Thank you.

I'd use a high temp engine paint or BBQ grill paint. The former comes in many colors while the latter is normally only in black.

Be sure to paint the underneath well. Depending on what is exhausting through it, it could be acidic.

You could also spray it with several coats of a product called Rust-Oleum cold galvanizing, or similar. Gives it that leaded look. Shouldn't peel or flake like a paint might.

How high is the top of the chimney? distance from firebox. Is it currently painted? Normally heat resistance isn't a big concern. I have painted new galvanized caps with latex paint. Any rusted caps will require a solvent based primer.

Thank you for the replies.
1. Honestly speaking, I have never burnt anything out of laziness. I hate cleaning. So I many not need a high temperature paint.
2. Previously I used exterior latex paint before. I will brush rusted areas (if salvageable) and use primer. Thank you for the tip.
3. Cold galvanizing paint. Where can I buy this? I already checked Walmart.

Check a local roof shingle supplier. They have spray paint that matches the products they sell.
They usually only sell to contractors, but they might hook you up.

Its with the spray paint. Wal-Mart may not have it but HD, Lowe's, Menards will.
