Chimney chase cover and cap - how to dismantle?

Here's a photo of my chimney chase cover and cap where they connect to the pipe. The cover was nailed to the chimney framing, but I'm at a loss as to how to disconnect the cap from the pipe and cover. Don't want to just start yanking on stuff. Can anyone help?

I can't be sure on yours, but usually they just turn about an inch CCW looking from the top and click off.

It's been a while since I checked out the forum. It's good to see you're still part of it! I'll give it a try.

Look at the angled thing at the bottom. It looks to be a strip of flashing wrapped around and folded back thru a strap. Is this standard?

That is a weather collar and is slipped on prior to engaging the cap. It sheds water away from the hole in the cap. It won't be removed. Only the mushroom caps will come off the pipe.

OK thanks. And all these intersections should be sealed when reinstalling?

If all you are removing is the mushroom caps with the screen, nothing will need to be sealed. The collar is already sealed at the bottom and possibly at the top and the cap naturally drains water away from it all.

Are you removing the cover? Once you have the mushrooms off, you may be able to cut the sealant at the top of the collar and lift the cover, collar and rim from the pipe. Be careful not to twist the cover once you begin removing it as it will disengage the first section of multi layered pipe in the flue, and it may be a booger to get back together. Fill us in on what you are doing.

Yes what I'm doing is redoing the siding on the wood frame down to replacing the old builders paper, so ideally I want to get the cover off.

If you look at the photo there are rusted SM screws at the top of the pipe. Is it possible the cap (mushroom) is only attached at those brackets to the pipe, and that once it's unscrewed the cover will slip off over it? Or is the "pipe" I'm seeing actually part of the cap, slipped over the actual chimney pipe?

It is highly possible that is the case. Loosening the screws won't cause the roof to cave in, so I'd try it. I did notice that your weather collar is not sitting on the cap at all, but is up about 1/2" or so. That may need to be worked on when you put it all back together. As it is presently, water could conceivably slide under the weather collar and right down into the chase.
