How to install a vent pipe boot on rolled roofing

I need to put a vent pipe through the roof, which is 3' wide rolls of composite that looks like it was maybe put down with a torch. I am not sure how to overlap the roofing onto the boot. Should I just drill a hole the size of the pipe and use tar around the penetration?

I would recommend the vent pipe boot be installed where it falls directly in the middle of one of your lap joints. That way the top course will cover and flash around the top half of the boot.

I would also lap the rolled roofing more than usual.
