Systems like this? UnderGround Downspout Diverter - Extension Keeps Roof Water Away From Foundation - Waterproof.com

It seems like a brilliant idea for summer spring and fall, but what about winter? I'm in Michigan. I imagine the PVC pipes filling with water, freezing, and splitting, draining all the water directly against the foundation.

I have only seen a couple of them and they were clogged. Dirt, grit from shingles and debris got trapped in the low part and plugged them solid. I don't know how long it took but it's not hard to imagine the bottom part of that U collecting debris.
