Repairing sections of metal roof.

I have a standing seam metal roof covering an historic building. Some areas need to be replaced. In the past, they would cut out the bad section, slip sheet metal underneath the good area with plenty of overlap, drive short screws through the overlapped sheets and into the decking. I would think tat the differences in the expansion rates between metal and wood decking would create stresses that would pull the screws out, but this doesn't seem to happen.

I guess there has to be some way to attach the metal roof material to the decking, but is this the best way to do it?
