Seeking advice for Glueing/Taping Small Rug Area

So, I have a landing that is about 25-30 sq.ft., has many doorways and trims areas to notch around. The floor is messed up--a mix of hardwood, plywood & patch to smooth out the gaps. It previously had a lightly glued super ugly rug on it. Not sure what they used, the glue is virtually not visible.

I'd ideally like to put down a pad and some carpet & have thought about gluing. I've sought advice from others who told me about double-stick/double-gluing methods but I keep on running into the wall that I'm told that that's just for commercial and for larger jobs.

I don't need a forever solution--just looking to have a reasonable 5-10+ year solution so I don't have to stare at the ugly floor. Is there an easily available type of padding I could buy and tape/glue and then tape/glue carpet on top?

So I will ask the most obvious question, if only 25-30 square ft why not just apply the money/time in covering up (which does not resolve anything) and repair/replace and have something that is nice to look at?

 

So, I guess you're asking why not rip up the floor and put in nice hardwood--something like that? If that's what you're asking, it will involve removing and thus perhaps replacing thresholds and trim. The reason the floor is a mess is it's where they decided to rip open the floor in the 80's to install the baseboard heating pipes. So, if anything every goes wrong, pretty much everything runs under that space.

Why, what would you do? (And do you have an answer to my original question?) Thanks!

 

Double-stick can be used for residential. I have not done any for many years, it is rarely done at all anymore. Ask whatever store you buy carpet from how to do it. I really don't remember trowel size, etc. We always sprayed the adhesive, but it can be done by hand.
You could also just strip and pad and stretch the carpet in. Not that hard to pull and relay if you need access.
