Covering/protecting carpet from chair

I have a couple desks in my house with rolling chairs in front of them. I bought some supposedly heavy duty plastic carpet protectors to put under the chairs but one of them has already turned into a mess of cracks in just a few weeks. Best guess is the pile of the carpet is too high for such a product. I would still like to have something under the chairs and I'm leaning toward plywood or plywood underlayment but am worried the edges would start falling apart.

Anyone have ideas or suggestions?

My former employer is constantly making new office chair pads for his office carpet... probably one per year. I know he has used 1/4" tempered board a lot and just sanded the edges.

Thick plywood would probably last the longest... such as a minimum 1/2" sanded ply.

In my office I have a couple plastic mats from Floor Tex. Both are over 5 years old and still no cracks but they are on short pile carpet.
